BRYNN

Brynn closed her eyes, loving the feel of his arms around her. It didn't make any sense, these feelings that she had for a total stranger, and yet in his arms, it was like she had always known him, like he was the missing part of her. And maybe he was. It didn't matter that it was only because the Aethor Institute manipulated their bodies into this attraction, she wanted him. She wanted this. She was so tired of being alone. So tired of being afraid all the time. And yet, how could she trust these powerful feelings that were only hours old?

“Tell me more about the other pair of bonded mates,” she said.

“Nick and Sarah. Nick’s a lawyer and Sarah’s a real estate agent.”

“Nick’s the Pollux variant,” Brynn said.

“Good guess.”

“I can’t see a Pollux variant being a real estate agent. Too under the radar.”

“True,” Peter agreed. “Their super power is that they can both fly.”

“Like we both have super strength. Is that how the Aethor Institute matched us? Pollux and Castor strains that have the same powers get something special in their milkshake to form this bond?”

“No one knows,” he said. “Or if they do, it isn’t common knowledge. The Pollux Legion and the Castor Consortium keep to themselves and don’t share information.”

“I noticed,” she grumbled. She was still a little pissed about the nutritional cubes.

“But there’s a third faction in play now.”

Fear made her skin clammy and she shivered. “The Mercury variants?”

“No, they’re all dead.”

“Are you sure about that?”

“Reasonably.”

“Mercury variants are never reasonable.”

“They were a nightmare. But this new faction calls themselves the Gemini Initiative.”

“I’m not sure I like that.” Brynn just wanted to stay under everyone’s radar. That’s why she wore a mask and shopped at several stores. No one wanted to live and let live anymore.

“To tell you the truth, I’m not so sure of them either. They’re an organization made up of both Pollux and Castor strain variants.”

“Are they all bonded mates?”

“No, the only other bonded mates aside from us that I know about is Nick and Sarah.”

“What if it’s a temporary thing?” she fretted.

“What if it’s not?”

“I’m having a hard time picturing Castor and Pollux strains working together.”

“Me too. But I do think we’re stronger together than we are apart. Just look at us. Or Nick and Sarah.”

It sounded too good to be true. But Brynn wanted to hold on to this fantasy of having a bonded mate for a little while longer. This was the first time she had ever been important enough to someone.

“How long did Nick and Sarah know each other before they...” Brynn didn’t know how else to say it. “...bonded?”

“Immediately. And they experienced a shift in their powers.”

That didn’t sound good. What else was her poor body going to have to endure? How much more of a freak would she be? “What type of shift?”

“Nothing bad. But they could communicate with each other at a distance. Sense where each other was when they were apart.”

“I’m not sure if that’s creepy or not,” she said.
